I read a lot of fiction books, some favs of mine that I would recommend:
If you like fantasy/alternate history type books, my uber suggested reads are:
Dies the Fire - S.M. Stirling
It is Book 1 of a series, the rest were not as good but it makes up for it. It starts in modern times but all technology is removed suddenly, without explanation (aliens?) we all start chopping each other with swords. There is a lot of Wicca in the series too.
The Peshawar Lancers - S.M. Stirling
Comets strike Earth in the past, keeps us at 19th century development, the British Empire relocates to India.
Island in the Sea of Time - S.M. Stirling
Book 1 of a Trilogy, I liked them all. It is related to his Dies the Fire series. The island of Natucket is put back into the Bronze Age.
Eric Flint's 1632 series
A west Virgina coal town is transplanted to Germany in the midst of the 30 years war. Has lots of cool anthologies etc. Some good thoughts on modern tech "gearing down" to a more maintainable level
For straight alternate history, Harry Turtledove, especially Guns of the South
Sci-Fi:
Market Forces - Richard Morgan (he has some other good'uns)
A look at a future where corporate backstabbing actually involves sanctioned murder.
Ender's Game - Orson Scott Card
Perhaps the ultimate book on war and combat. Using children to fight.
Starship Troopers - Robert Heinlein
It is NOT LIKE THAT SHIT MOVIE! What a travesty.
Dune - Frank Herbert
Everyone has to love Dune!
The Forever War - Joe Haldeman
War goes on for a long long time, space travel has soldiers losing hundreds of years per engagement, seeing the societal changes.
Draka Seriers - S. M. Stirling
Alternate history, leads to new group taking over in Africa.
Popular Fiction:
Small Town - Lawrence Block
He writes a lot of interesting books centred in NYC, some "detective novels" and that. This is just an interesting series of stories. Also is somewhat riddled with "sexual deviance"
Plum Island - Nelson DeMille
Smart ass cop investigates murder. I thought it was hilarious.
Dark Places or Blood Price - Jon Evans
Computer hacker to the rescue. A little snarky. They are interesting.
The Watchman - Richard Crais
Cop shoot 'em up. He writes a series of books where the main character of this book is normally a side character.
Fifty Degrees Below - Kim Stanley Robinson
It was the middle book of a trilogy but the only one I really liked and the one I read first. Interesting look at a scientist living in Washington, climate change, his life, living as a fregan, in a tent etc.
The Long Walk; The Running Man; The Stand - Stephen King
The world ends, that sucks type books:
Wolf and Iron - Gordon R. Dickson
Global economic collapse, researcher making his way across the country.
